TOPIC: Own Design Delta

Own Design Delta 6 months 1 week ago #84

Ok so with Steve L and Barry leading the way I thought I would add my current build thread. I think these help motivate me to finish the build - but we'll see.

Having not owned a Delta before it was high time to design my own so with the help of my 13 year old son we drew a plan for a 45 deg sweep delta with undercarriage and a nose (I think they look better that way). I CNC machined a kit and we started putting it together. As the LE sweeps 45 deg so do the top and bottom main spars (1/4" sq balsa). No problem until I realised I hadn't accounted for the extra dimension of the sweep when I machined the ribs. Bugger. After a bit of a faff I notched each rib so they would accommodate the spars.

After adding the webs to the front spars here she is so far as we start the webbing on the rear spars.

Always a first time for everything Barry!.

Been away for a couple of weeks but have managed to get into the workshop to sniff some balsa dust and progress the Delta.
Planked and enclosed the motor which will have a removeable hatch and cooling air inlet. Added the mount for the nose leg and is ready to be attached. The lollipop sticks are to ensure the casing does not foul the motor....

I have also managed to complete the LE sheeting, spar webs and the LE (although this was added after this photo was taken). The baulk of the sanding/shaping of the LE is done and just needs finish sanding before covering.

And finally I have married the nose to the wing complete with temporary jigs to hold in place. Alas, here she will have to wait for another couple of weeks until my return...

I managed to complete a little more of the Delta in the last week or so. Top sheeting (1/16th) added and temporarily pinned the fin and rudder to the top. There is also a ventral strake too but that will be added after covering (as will the fin).
Push rods to the elevons and servos are mounted with a carbon fibre push rod to the nose wheel.
